Orchestra at Work
Have you ever wondered how a professional symphony orchestra prepares for a concert? Orchestra at Work gives students an opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal and discover just what is involved in preparing for concert night. This innovative program opens up Philharmonic rehearsals to school groups, bringing the rehearsals to selected Long Island high schools when possible.
Through Orchestra at Work, students develop an appreciation of musical interpretation and are given the opportunity to watch and hear the stop-and-start features of the rehearsal process. They see first-hand the collaboration between the conductor and world-class musicians. The conductor, wearing a lapel microphone, interacts with the students, inspiring them to participate in the musical process and helping them to hear the subtle nuances that bring each piece to the Philharmonic's high level of performance quality—from just note playing to music making. Orchestra and band students, sitting among the musicians in their respective sections, can observe what the conductor asks of the musicians and how they respond to his requests.
Teachers receive preparatory materials to help prepare students for their rehearsal experience. When possible, students will have an opportunity to meet the conductor and/or members of the Orchestra post-rehearsal.
Note: If you are interested in attending a Philharmonic rehearsal, please contact the Education Department. School groups can attend Orchestra at Work rehearsals only with advance booking arranged through the Education Department, subject to availability.
Suggested grade levels: 7-12 (gr. 4-6 band & orchestra at teacher’s discretion)
